Leg 1, Ride 5: Milwaukee to Kenosha
Well, today was our first tough weather day of the trip. We awoke to a frost advisory and a temperature of 38F. We started from Downtown Milwaukee with a whipping headwind coming from the south. Then the rain started. Near the end of the day, as we approached Kenosha, the same story: cold, brisk headwind with rain.
But, the cold was no match for my secret weapon: dish gloves. The gloves, sadly, prevented me from taking pictures for the foul weather parts.
The middle 2/3 of the trip was actually pretty nice, although still cold. I'm not sure if the temperature even broke 50F today, even when the sun was shining.
We stopped in Racine for a couple of hours for lunch and to visit their local history museum. Among the things we learned: Racine was an early hot spot for women's professional baseball, the car heater was invented here, and Racine has an actual Egyptian mummy whose provenance is not fully known.
Downtown Racine was actually kinda dead, but we did find a decent place for lunch. On the way out of town, our path was closed and we had to backtrack a bit to find a detour. On all of our bike trips, I always guarantee Marna that I will make at least one cue sheet error, or her money back. Our first one happened in Racine, where I typed "left" instead of "right". So, we got off course a bit. After we figured that out and backtracked, the very next line had the exact same problem, and we got off-course again.
Today was our longest ride so far: planned for 43 miles, but with the Racine shenanigans, it turned into 47. But, both of us felt pretty good all day -- we're certainly not in tip-top shape yet, but our legs felt fine. Likely thanks to the day off in Milwaukee yesterday.
Kenosha has lots more going on than Racine does. We were hoping to hit two museums here in Kenosha... but we arrived later than expected thanks to the problems in Racine. So we will have to skip one of them, and hit up the other one in the morning.
